The Royal Palace of Madrid (Palacio Real de Madrid) is one of the most iconic and grand structures in Spain, serving as the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family, although today it is mainly used for state ceremonies. Located in the heart of Madrid, near the Plaza de Oriente, the palace is a stunning example of European Baroque architecture and one of the largest royal palaces in Europe, with over 3,400 rooms.
History
Construction of the palace began in 1738 under the reign of King Philip V, after the old Alcázar of Madrid burned down in 1734. It was designed by the Italian architect Filippo Juvarra, though it was his disciple, Giovanni Battista Sacchetti, who completed the structure. Over the centuries, various monarchs made modifications and additions to the palace.
Architecture and Interior
The Royal Palace boasts a lavish exterior and interior, featuring Italian and French Baroque influences. Inside, visitors can explore the richly decorated rooms, such as the Throne Room, adorned with velvet, gold, and intricate frescoes, and the Royal Chapel, which houses musical instruments like the famed Stradivarius string quartet. The Hall of Mirrors and Gasparini Room stand out for their opulence, while the Royal Armoury displays an impressive collection of historical weaponry.
Gardens and Surroundings
Adjacent to the palace are the Sabatini Gardens and the Campo del Moro, offering peaceful green spaces with fountains and scenic views of the palace. These gardens provide a beautiful backdrop and are open to the public.
While no longer a royal residence, the Royal Palace of Madrid remains a symbol of Spain's monarchy and is a major tourist attraction, offering insight into the country’s royal history and cultural heritage. Visitors can tour the palace, its art collections, and the surrounding areas, making it a must-see in Madrid.
